What is the future of EV charging?

6/8/2023

Following a dramatic rise in electric vehicle (EV) sales in recent years, investment in EV charging stations has become an increasingly pressing predicament for governments and large-scale organizations. The question at the forefront now is: What is the best way to invest in EV charging in the future?

What does the future of charging electric vehicles look like?

The electric vehicle market, previously dominated by Tesla, has grown and diversified significantly in recent years. Established car manufacturers such as BMW, Vauxhall, Ford, and Audi have now embraced electromobility, helping to drive the ever-growing electromobility industry to a higher level. However, the influx of electric vehicles on the roads raises several concerns. One of the most commonly cited barriers for potential EV owners is the accessibility of EV charging stations. Many governments across Europe have begun to recognize the rise of electric vehicles and have already implemented electric vehicle infrastructure investment plans to address this. Most of these programs target the number of electric vehicle charging stations available. For example, the UK government has pledged investment in five times the number of charging points currently available in the country. This will help additional chargers, like our Lumina AC Public Charger seen here when charging popping up stations across the country.

However, the future of electric vehicle charging infrastructure depends not only on the increasing number of available electric vehicle charging stations. Electric vehicle charging is becoming increasingly specialized, and there are a number of different and new ways to expand this industry. Below, we briefly outline other ways to invest in an electric vehicle-friendly future. It is worth noting that there are currently three main types of electric vehicle charging stations: public, semi-public, and private. To keep pace with such a dynamic industry, future investments in EV charging infrastructure must continue to evolve and cover all three charging types.

Five more ways electric vehicle charging stations are evolving:

  1. Infrastructure for ultra-fast charging: Fast chargers like our 180 DC charger reduce charging wait times and get you back on the road faster and more efficiently.
  2. Grid-integrated charging solutions: The development of intelligent charging systems like ours, Lumina AC Public Charger, which features dynamic load balancing, means vehicles can be intelligently charged and energy availability optimized, saving time and money.
  3. Integration of renewable energies: In order to further minimize the carbon footprint of electric vehicles, environmentally friendly energy sources such as sun and wind are increasingly being brought into focus and integrated into charging networks for electric vehicles. The future of electric vehicle charging depends on developing these sustainable energy sources.
  4. Portable Charging: Small, lightweight devices that can be easily transported for charging provide a great solution when traditional charging stations are unavailable. These compact chargers, like the DuraCharger, which supports charging up to 20 kW, offer mobility and significant performance.
  5. Wireless Charging: Although still in the early stages of development, the future of EV charging could include wireless charging technology. This would be particularly useful for public charging stations as it eliminates the need for physical connections and allows more vehicles to be charged at the same time. The future of electric vehicle charging could be wireless.

As the electric vehicle market continues to grow and evolve, investing in electric vehicle charging infrastructure becomes increasingly important. Effectively navigating this evolving industry requires a multi-faceted approach that takes into account the number of chargers available, the quality and sustainability of EV charging solutions, and the infrastructure surrounding them. If future investments consider this broader perspective, the future of EV charging looks bright.
